Songs of the Russia's meadows, rivers and villages
Slavyanka has chosen a program that includes both traditional folk and composed melodies set for male voice, mostly in 4-part, but occasionally in 3-part harmony. The collection is a mix of the well-known, such as Meadowlands, a tune closely associated with the Soviet Red Army Chorus and the Song of the Volga Boatmen, a well known tune popularized in the US by Sergei Jarov's Don Cossack Chorus. Unique in the list is an unfinished song by Mussorgski, which is reputed to be his last composition. Folk tunes from the Georgian region are also included, representing traditional music over 1500 years old. Perhaps most intriguing is Priidye Spas Dnyes (Come Savior, Today) which is a symbiotic combination of cultures: Byzantine chant in ancient lydian mode, with Tuvan 'khoomei' (multi-tone) singing, and accompanied by Tibetan bell!
